Vitamin M - Mindset
Nose Down OR Nose Up ?

We as humans are the only creatures on earth who have a pre-frontal cortex,  or cerebral cortex.  This is the part of our brain that is right behind our forehead.  In this place we are actually able to stand outside ourselves, metaphorically,  and look in at our thoughts.  From this standpoint,  we are able to choose the thoughts that serve us best.  We can choose thoughts that trigger the Stress Response or the thoughts that trigger the Relaxation Response. 
           
In previous blog posts we talked about attitude.  The definition is simply our thoughts and beliefs. 
           
Airplanes are equipped with Attitude Indicators.  Yes,  I have that spelled correctly.  Attitude not Altitude.  This is the device that shows the pitch of a plane in relation to the horizon.  These lifesaving gauges show the pitch of a plane, even when the pilot cannot see the horizon.  
           
When a plane is in nose up position,  the plane is rising.  When in a nose down, it is in a decline and heading for the ground. 
           
Circumstances, people and disappointments and our attitudes about them can cause a nose down, but only if we choose those thoughts.  There are situations we cannot control, but there is still SO much you can control;  Your 60,000 thoughts a day; your reactions; your communication; your schedule; your creative ideas; your apologies; your personal growth; your skills; your health habits; etc. 
           
I invite you to think about this:  Choose your Attitude Indicator ahead of time.  What's the best thing you CAN control? Who YOU show up as!  Make a list:  what are the qualities and attributes you need to be in order to create the success and quality of life you want?  This is your Attitude Indicator for you to focus on. 
           
Make a list of descriptors you want to be.  This list answers the question: how do I need to show up in order to create the life I want? You will always feel a sense of "nose up" attitude even if external circumstances are hard. 

Make  list of attributes, qualities and attitudes you want to be:

Pick a thought that captures that mindset and attitude.  Make it easy to remember your Attitude Indicator.

Be Intentional.  Make your mind set on thinking, feeling and acting as that person no matter the circumstances you face. 
           
When unwanted events happen, we humans tend to explain why they happened so we know how to respond.  The "story" we tell determines our behavior:  The car behind you honks their horn...if you think the driver did it out of impatience you may respond with harsh words.  If you think they did it to alert you of danger you may wave 'thank you'.  If you think the driver's child playfully hit the horn,  you probably will ignore it. 
          
If you don't have your Mindset on your Attitude Indicator you will explain the situation in terms of "what the situation means about me" ( this happened because I'm not good enough, I'm being punished or they don't value me, which must mean I'm not valuable) 

This "nose down" way of personalizing a situation reinforces your limiting beliefs and derails your attention from problem solving. These are self chosen stressors.   

What is your current "story" that explains why an event happened?

From the outside looking in,  ask yourself what thoughts about this story are reflecting meaning about you?

Instead of defaulting to a 'nose down' interpretation of the story, look at the facts of the situation and context.  Tell the story from your mind set on your  Attitude Indicator.
