Do I Look Fat In This Stress? Part One

Our bodies have been wonderfully designed so that when we choose our thoughts and choose our nourishment,  we can operate at our best levels.

There are two nervous systems in our bodies.  The Sympathetic Nervous System and the Parasympathetic Nervous System

This illustration shows the two systems.

The Sympathetic Nervous System is needed in situations where we must move quickly,  like catching a child who is falling,  but when we remain in chronic low level Stress Response it takes a toll on our health, our relationships and our productivity. This happens when we choose self chosen stressors and choose to focus on problems.

When we shift our focus to optimism and positivity,  we activate the Parasympathetic Nervous System, the Relaxation Response.  When we do this, the chemical flow within our bodies completely changes.

The Stress Response triggers fight our flight, survival mode.  This signals a release of cortisol which triggers insulin.  Insulin is a fat storage hormone.  When we are storing fat, we are not building muscle.

The Relaxation Response, on the other hand, triggers the flow of endorphins in our bodies.  This helps our bodies assimilate our nourishment, use our own fat for fuel, and to build muscle.

Here's a quote from one of my instructors:

"This is the easiest hack around nutrition and digestion and if viewers get nothing else from this conversation, take away this. The way the brain is set up, yin and yang, 2 halves, sympathetic, parasympathetic. Sympathetic nervous system is in it’s extreme. It’s fight or flight stress response. In the extreme stress response when you are truly running for your life, digestive system totally shuts down. Why? Because when that lion is chasing you, you don’t need to be digesting your Fruit Loops. All your metabolic energy wants to go into survival. Now, when you shift into parasympathetic nervous system dominance, that’s the state of relaxation response, but it’s a switch that flips. When parasympathetic nervous system is activated, full, healthy digestion assimilation and, check it out, day in, day out calorie-burning capacity is activated. Yes, you and I burn calories more vigorously in the hour or maybe 2 that you exercise, but you burn the bulk of your calories in the other 22, 24 hours a day." - Marc David from the Institute for the Psychology of Eating

Until next time, just become a watcher of your thoughts. Are you choosing to stress over circumstances?  Without judging yourself, be aware.

I'll have some tips for sorting this out in upcoming posts.  If you would like to know more,
