What do we sell ourselves on?
What Do We Sell
Ourselves On?
As humans, we are faced with making decisions every day and many times every day.
When we decide we want to improve our self-care by choosing foods with high nutritional value, we can expect there to be an internal conflict.
Why is that?
Why is it that there is a part of us that wants to sell us on junk?
What can we do to keep from selling ourselves a regret?
First, let's talk about the Why -
Our heart (desire) tells our mind that we want it. Then our heart convinces our mind that we need it.
It's not hard to justify a need.
It sounds like this:
" I just need to take the edge off."
" I deserve it after a day like today."
" I need a break."
" I just need to take the edge off."
" I deserve it after a day like today."
" I need a break."
Then we find ourselves with thoughts like, "I don't understand why I did what I did."
It's our heart.
It's our heart.
“The human heart is the most deceitful of all things,
and desperately wicked.
Who really knows how bad it is?" - Jer 17:9
But there is a way forward!
and desperately wicked.
Who really knows how bad it is?" - Jer 17:9
But there is a way forward!
It begins by being curious.
Be honest with yourself.
"And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” John 8:32
The truth sets us free.
Dishonesty will imprison.
Ask yourself, " What is the real reason you're ________?"
It sounds like this:
" What is the real reason you want that candy bar? " - I'm stressed? I'm lonely? I'm sad?
" What is the real reason you want that candy bar? " - I'm stressed? I'm lonely? I'm sad?
Notice the answer and also notice that sweets aren't good friends. They aren't friends at all!
Would you rather be happy or healthy?
Would you rather have false pleasure or self-control?
Would you rather have false pleasure or self-control?
Our Heavenly Father doesn't leave us to fight this battle alone. He gives us guidance.
"Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life." - Prov 4:23
He even makes a way for us.
"His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus." - Phil 4:7
"His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus." - Phil 4:7
How do we get His peace?
"Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. 7 Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand." - Phil 4:3-7a
Remember, when your mind tries to sell you on what you need, He knows what you truth-fully need.
"And this same God who takes care of me will supply all your needs from his glorious riches, which have been given to us in Christ Jesus." - Phil 4;19
I know that going through this process of uncovering the tricky "selling" and not giving in is challenging. I also know that the best way to improve in NOT to beat yourself up.
