Stinking Thinking

Stinking Thinking

I have an inner toddler voice.  She says things like....

"What is wrong with you? You're never going to lose weight."
"You're never going to get this, you might as well have a cookie."
"You can't do this, just have a glass of wine."

Have you heard your inner voice sounding the same?  Trying to lose weight or accomplish anything will make your inner critic get louder and louder.

Our inner voice is how we talk to ourselves.  It is the thoughts we have about ourselves.  It is our belief about ourselves.

These beliefs are well practiced, aren't they? There isn't anything wrong with you because you think these things.  They are just a bunch of sentences or thoughts running around in your head.  They only become a problem when we start judging them or believing them.

In the verse Eph. 4:17 It talks about unwholesome talk come our of your mouths.  Unwholesome means the same thing as the smell of rotting fish.  Andy Stanley calls it "fish mouth".

But before words come out of our mouth, it is in our mind as a thought.  It could be that you have been practicing "Stinking Thinking" on yourself.

Our first reaction is to try to stop the "stinking thinking" that leads to "fish mouth".  Those thoughts won't stop just because you don't like them.

The key? Learn to hear them but not go straight into frustration, judgement and belief.
"Stinking thinking" takes some time to change and that's OK.  It is worth every minute.  Most people give up out of frustration because it takes time and effort to flip the script.

When you notice "stinking thinking", practice something better.

I may sound like this: "I will never figure this out." I shift to something like this, " I hear that thought but that's not the way I want to think right now.  I will keep going with my steps and I will figure this out."

Deciding to redirect is the key.  I do it A LOT.

Some of you may think "this is hard work!".  Yes, it does require effort and paying attention.

The alternative is going through your days feeling terrible because of all the "stinking thinking" about yourself and the "fish mouth" you've been talking to yourself with.

Your inner thinking and talking won't change overnight, but the fact is, you will never believe something new if you don't think something new.

When you begin using wholesome talk with yourself, you begin building up, one thought at a time.

Grace wins, every time!
You are so worth it,
Peggy
